Mustard Seed no longer partnering with Coldest Night of the Year

Dec 20, 2022 | 8:34 AM

The Mustard Seed says that as of February 2023, it will no longer participate in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) event.

“After careful and prayerful deliberation, we have decided that the cost to partner with CNOY has become far greater than the benefits to the people and communities we serve,” said Rowena Browne, Chief Development Officer of The Mustard Seed.

The Mustard Seed thanks volunteers who have stepped up for CNOY events over the last seven years.

Mustard Seed officials say the organization will be planning an event for supporters to participate in, in hopes of achieving the organization’s collective vision to eliminate poverty and homelessness.

Coldest Night of the Year organizers responded to rdnewsNOW’s request for comment over the weekend, saying that it plans to returns to Red Deer in 2024, but is also once again hosting an event in Lacombe for 2023 with Youth Unlimited.

“The Red Deer event has grown year after year since it was first launched in 2012 and we’ve been amazed by the generosity of the community. Over the past 10 years, just over $350,000 has been raised by CNOY in Red Deer, first for Berachah Place, then in support of Red Deer Loaves and Fishes, and more recently for the Mustard Seed,” says Jen Taylor, National Director.

“We’re grateful for our time working with each of them and celebrate the impact CNOY has had in Red Deer working with each partner. Across Canada we work in 183 communities along with hundreds of business and community groups who, like in Red Deer, care about people experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness whether youth, families, or women fleeing violence.”

The Coldest Night of the Year event in Lacombe is scheduled for February 25, starting at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church (27008 Township Road 405.5.). More details are here.
