Red Deer Food Bank says small businesses make big differences

Dec 14, 2022 | 1:48 PM

At this time of year, many business owners are creating seasonal promotions, juggling staff schedules and holiday hours, and balancing it all with their own families and personal demands, say officials with the Red Deer Food Bank.

Still, many central Alberta businesses are also supporting the needs of others this year by hosting food drives and making donations to support organizations like the Red Deer Food Bank, they further point out.

Jack Fortin is one such business owner, say Food Bank officials. Jack is founder of Jaxville Gold & Silver Trading Ltd., a Red Deer business that buys and sells gold and silver, with the goal of placing as much of these commodities in the strong hands of the community as possible.

The Red Deer Food Bank says Fortin also believes very strongly in the power of helping others in times of need.

“It’s obvious that many people in our community are hurting right now,” says Fortin. “When I hear how the pressure on Food Banks is the highest it’s ever been, I feel it’s my responsibility to contribute directly.”

Executive Director of the Red Deer Food Bank, Mitch Thomson, appreciates all the donations of local small businesses. “The multitude of food drives hosted by small businesses without question help supplement our food supplies, and every bit is appreciated. When cash donations such as this come in however, we can order specifically what is needed for our emergency hampers. As an example, a few years ago we were able to purchase boxes of cereal at 40 cents each. Having available cash when opportunities arise, allows us to make strategic purchases.”

“It’s not my usual way to be public about this,” adds Fortin. “But I want to get the message out to my fellow business owners and entrepreneurs: If you can give, I encourage you to do so.”
