Martha traded her broken down body for a new one early in the morning on October 27, 2022. She began life at Calais, Alberta; the daughter of Emil and Freda Slopianka. Her siblings and their spouses, Edith (Charlie) Patterson, Herb (Shirley) Slopianka, Emily (Al) Ratzlaff, and Ernie (Faith) Slopianka, shared many years and sweet memories. Martha loved people. She found her calling in teaching. Martha especially loved teaching grade 2. Children loved her. Even well past her retirement she would pause to talk to children at every opportunity. She graduated with a degree in Education from University of Alberta in 1965 with 9 years of teaching experience. Martha also loved to travel. She taught in Kenya for two years before returning home to Valleyview to care for her ailing parents. Her experience in Kenya was a highlight for her. While teaching near High River she met a man. At the age of 45 she became a wife, a stepmother and grandmother the day she married Alf Poffenroth. Over the years, the family multiplied. Martha is survived by her 7 stepchildren, their spouses, 22 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her beloved husband passed in 2003. Martha loved well. She loved the Lord Jesus. She loved her family. She loved her friends. She invested her time in people. We honor her; we miss her, but we are excited she’s in a new body in the presence of Jesus! Celebration of life on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Zion Evangelical Church in Didsbury at 2:00 p.m. Service will be lived streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/2557543
