Football Alberta weekly high school football rankings

Oct 17, 2022 | 12:02 PM

Football Alberta has released its Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in the province and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2022 season.

These rankings will come out every week from now up until November 7. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take that rank into Provincials.

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size over a three-year average by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME(S) OF THE WEEK:

Number One vs. Number Two!

Tier I

#1 Harry Ainlay Titans vs. #2 Salisbury Sabres

7:30 p.m., Friday, October 21, Emerald Hills Stadium (Sherwood Park)

Like two heavyweight boxers in the first round of a championship fight, these two programs have been stalking each other since the season started. Since that time, it’s been a predictable script with both beating quality opponents in the pre-season then running the board in the regular season with only one other team in Metro Edmonton Division I coming within four TD’s in any game they’ve played.

Regular season games between these two have been classics both pre- and post-pandemic to the point where they’ve gotten nicknames like the “Battle in the Blizzard” in 2018 won by the Titans, the “Faux Field Goal Game” in 2019 which ended in an 11-11 tie, and the “(Almost) Comeback Classic” from last year where the Titans took off to a 28-0 lead at the half only to hang on for a 35-30 victory over the Sabres. Emerald Hills Stadium only holds about 800 people so for those interested and don’t want to wind up sitting on the grass overflow berm – get their early.

The Unicorn Game!

Tier I & II

#1 (Tier II) Holy Trinity Academy Knights vs. #3 (Tier I) Raymond Comets

6:00 p.m., Friday, October 21, Comets Stadium (Raymond)

With Provincials only a couple of weeks away, here is a game of what might have been if there was only one Tier of high school football in Alberta. Raymond continues to work miracles with its Tier IV sized population and is clearly a Top 3 team in Tier I with the only blemishes on their record being a 25-15 loss to #1 Harry Ainlay on August 25th and a 34-34 tie to #4 Ernest Manning on September 15.

Holy Trinity Academy has no blemishes at all with a 7-0 record and the vibe that they are not only #1 in Tier II but might possibly be the best team in Alberta. As of mid-October, they are really hitting their stride winning their last four games against Tier I and II sized opponents by an average score of 60-7. However, a playing Tier I top three opponent is another story. Or is it? Are the Knights the Unicorn Team of 2022 and possibly the best in Alberta regardless of school size? Or will the Comets show that that crown might possibly belong to them? You can probably check out this game on Raymond’s usual YouTube Live broadcast or take in the fun live in Raymond. Either way, this has the potential for Game of the Year written all over it.
