Oct 14, 2022 | 11:31 PM

The Red Deer Rebels stretched their unbeaten streak to six games to start the season, following a 4-2 win over the Warriors at the Moose Jaw Events Centre Friday night.

The first period comprised of just a few unseized power play opportunities for the Warriors until the home team scored in the final 20 seconds on Rebel’s goaltender Kyle Kelsey. It was Jagger Firkus who scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Denton Mateychuk and Lucas Brenton, putting the Warriors up 1-0.

After 30 minutes of play, the Rebels outshot the Warriors 13-8.

In the second period, the Rebels tied the game 1-1 when the Warriors actually scored on their own net during a clearing attempt. Deeming Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz as the beneficiary, it was listed as his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, on former Rebels netminder Connor Ungar.

At 15:10, Moose Jaw’s Eric Alarie scored his second goal this season with assists from Robert Baco and Atley Calvert, giving the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

Before the period came to a close, however, and with Moose Jaw’s Marek Howell in the box for hooking, the Rebels’ Ben King scored his first goal of the season after returning to the team from the Anaheim Ducks this week. Christopher Sedoff and Jayden Grubbe assisted on the power play goal to bring the game back to a 2-2 tie.

The period ended just 49 seconds later with Moose Jaw’s Tate Schofer called for checking to the head and given a game misconduct, served by teammate Eric Alarie.

Starting off the third period on a power play, the Rebels Ben King struck again, scoring his second of the game and of the season, at 3:04, rebounding off goaltender Connor Ungar’s pad. Assisted by Kalan Lind and Jayden Grubbe, the Rebels now lead 3-2.

It would later prove to be the game winner, but shortly after at 4:43 and still on the power play, Red Deer’s Jayden Grubbe scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Kalan Lind and Ben King to make the score 4-2.

The Rebels maintained their lead to the end, going 3/7 with the man advantage while the Warriors went 0/3.

The third star of the evening went to Moose Jaw’s Jagger Firkus who scored the first goal of the evening. The second star went to the Rebels’ Jayden Grubbe for his two assists and one goal. While the first star was awarded to Red Deer’s Ben King, his first star this season, for his two goals and one assist.

The Rebels play the Swift Current Broncos next. The game is Saturday night, October 15, at the InnovationPlex starting at 7 p.m.
