Rebels climb to 5-0 with determined win over Hitmen

Oct 8, 2022 | 10:26 PM

The Red Deer Rebels are now an impressive 5-0 after defeating the Calgary Hitmen Saturday night by a final score of 3-2.

The matchup was also the final in a four-game homestand for Red Deer, who have outscored their opponents so far this season 22 to 9. No other team besides Kamloops (8) has allowed fewer goals, though the Blazers have only played three games.

Two other teams remain undefeated in the WHL — Portland at 4-0 and Seattle at 3-0.

Continuing his torrid pace to start the season, Jhett Larson (5th) scored just 42 seconds in to draw first blood for the home team on Saturday. Kalan Lind and Craig Armstrong assisted.

The period remained scoreless until there were just 64 seconds on the clock, which is when Tyson Galloway (1st) tied things up for Calgary, and it was 1-1 after 20 minutes.

The middle frame was bookended by two fights, first between Calgary’s Keagan Slaney and Rebel Kai Uchacz at 6:41, then between Red Deer’s Frantisek Formanek and Hitmen Maxim Muranov with six seconds remaining.

In between the scraps — at 11:11 — Red Deer retook the lead, Jace Isley (3rd) scoring with help from Jayden Grubbe and Matteo Fabrizi.

The score remained 2-1 Rebels headed to the second intermission.

In the third, Calgary was determined and found a way to tie things again when Jacob Wright (1st) scored at 6:10.

After 60 minutes, the score was even, and the teams headed to overtime.

In OT, with Red Deer shorthanded, the Hitmen had a chance to end it early, but could not. Instead, it was Red Deer’s Isley, taking a shorthanded penalty shot 1:12 into the extra frame.

Isley (4th) did not miss, and the Red Deer Rebels remain undefeated.

The three stars of the game begins with Kyle Kelsey earning his fourth win of the season, and second in as many nights with 35 saves on 37 shots faced.

Calgary’s Jacob Wright was second star, and the man with two goals on the night including the game winner was third star.

Red Deer was scoreless on two power play chances while Calgary failed to capitalize on five separate opportunities.
