Red Deer County Fire Services to conduct simulation for home fire sprinklers

Oct 5, 2022 | 3:44 PM

Red Deer County Fire Services will be hosting a demonstration this Saturday to show the importance of in-home sprinkler systems.

On October 8 at 1:00 p.m., Fire Services personnel will perform the Home Sprinkler Display Demonstration in the west parking lot of Crossroads Church and answer questions about in-home fire safety.

The demonstration will be a live, side-by-side simulation of a fire in two bedrooms from a typical Alberta house. One room will be equipped with a sprinkler system and one will not.

Officials say the simulation is designed to show how well the sprinkler systems work and the benefits of installing them.

“Every community needs the facts about home fire sprinklers. Red Deer County Protective Services wants to raise awareness of how quickly a home fire can get out of control and the life-saving benefits of installing home fire sprinklers,” said Fire Inspector Scott Tuton.

According to the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition:

  • Without sprinklers, today’s home fires become deadly in as little as two minutes;
  • These fires put residents and firefighters at risk from toxic smoke, heat and flames;
  • In a home fire, the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate when the temperature reaches about 165°F or roughly 74°C;
  • The sprinkler will spray water directly on the fire, controlling or putting it out. In most home fires just one sprinkler activates.
