Bernard (Barney) Zubot passed from this earth to his heavenly home on Sunday, September 11, 2022 in his home at the Villa Marie in Red Deer Alberta, at the age of 95.
Barney started his teaching career at a young age (17) and taught for eight memorable years. While teaching in Medicine Hat and area, he met and married the love of his life, Rose Schlosser. The second passion in his work career was farming (which included many farm equipment modifications). He and Rose returned to the family farm in the Mendham area after they had been married for a year. It was here that they raised their four children, were active in their community and church and had a wonderful life surrounded by family, many dear friends and neighbors in this close- knit community. He loved hosting his siblings and their families on the farm on which they had grown up. His third work passion was income tax. While still farming he studied to become a farm tax accountant and enjoyed knowing the tax laws so thoroughly that he could work them to the advantage of himself or one of the many neighbors whose taxes he did. Barney and Rose enjoyed their retirement in Medicine Hat which for Barney included competitive bowling, lots of golf, curling (which was best when done with his brothers), countless card games, traveling with their fifth-wheel trailer and always trying to find a way to brighten someone’s day.
Although Barney no longer was a teacher in a school classroom, he remained a teacher in the classroom of life all his years. And what a great teacher he was! His zest for life, love of family, problem -solving and enthusiasm for a new adventure, combined with his love of a joke or trick resulted in a life filled with much joy and happiness.
He was predeceased by his wife Rose (nee Schlosser), his parents Michael and Mary Zubot, his parents-in-law Frank and Barbara Schlosser and was the last survivor of a family of eleven children.
Barney’s memory and his love lives on in his four children, Janice (Bob) Schmitt, Beverly (Bob Gephart) Zubot, Albin (Marilyn) Zubot and Myra (Jack Mitchell) Zubot Mitchell. Many stories and fond memories are held close in the hearts of his fourteen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren and five great- great grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather for prayers at Eventide Funeral Home (4820 45th St, Red Deer) on Sunday, September 18 at 7:00 pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Mary’s Parish (6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer) on Monday September 19 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery, in Medicine Hat at a later date.
