Rebels lose first pre-season game to Hitmen
The Red Deer Rebels opened their 2022-2023 pre-season with a 6-3 loss to the Hitmen at the Tsuut’ina Seven Chiefs Sportsplex in Calgary Friday night.
The first two pre-season games for the Rebels are against the Hitmen in a home and home series this weekend, before they face the Lethbridge Hurricanes in a home and home series to wrap up the preseason next weekend.
The Rebels came in strong at the puck’s first drop Friday as Hunter Mayo scored 33 seconds into the first period on goaltender Alex Garrett. The goal was assisted by Vojtech Port and Craig Armstrong to give Red Deer an early 1-0 lead.
Later in the period, however, Red Deer’s Talon Brigley was sent to the box for holding the opponent’s stick. This ultimately led to a Hitmen power play goal from Riley Fiddler-Schultz who scored at 14:07 on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey. Assists were made by Carter Yakemchuk and David Adaszynski to tie the game 1-1.
