By the end of the first, Calgary outshot the Rebels 18-8.

The second period then saw the Hitmen’s Anton Yatsyshin score his first goal of the pre-season at 3:22, with assists made by Carter Yakemchuk and Xander Schulte, putting Calgary up 3-1.

Midway through the period, the Rebels changed goaltenders, switching out Kyle Kelsey for Chase Wutzke.

But Red Deer’s Carter Anderson was given a tripping penalty shortly after, creating an opening for the Hitmen to score at 13:59. The power play goal by Riley Fiddler-Schultz was his second goal of the game and assisted by Carter Yakemchuk once again and Matteo Danis, bringing their lead 4-1.

Fighting back, the Rebels’ Jhett Larson scored just 10 seconds later. The unassisted goal brought the score to 4-2 still in favor of the Hitmen.

The second period proved a more even game for shots on goal, with Calgary outshooting Red Deer 17-16 for a two-period total of 35-24 in favour of the Hitmen.

In the third, the Rebels took advantage of the period’s first power play when Calgary’s Matthew Sutter was called for cross checking. Red Deer’s Kalan Lind scored at 4:35 with assists made by Jhett Larson and Talon Brigley, bringing the score to 4-3 for Calgary.

Then at 6:58, the Hitmen’s Tomis Marinkovic scored an insurance goal assisted by Brandon Whynott and Blake Heward to make it 5-3 Calgary.

Finally, Calgary’s David Adaszynski took advantage of a power play opportunity for the home team when the Rebels’ Frantisek Fromanek was sent to the box for high sticking. Carter Yakemchuk and Matteo Danis assisted on the goal, bringing the final score to 6-3 for Calgary.

Although the Rebels pulled goalie Chase Wutzke out of the net for the final minute and five seconds, it was to no avail this game.

The Rebels outshot the Hitmen 10-9 in the final period but were outshot by Calgary over three periods 44-34.

On the power play, the Rebels went 1/3 while the Hitmen went a perfect 3/3 with the man advantage.

The Rebels will have a chance at redemption against the Hitmen Saturday evening at the Peavey Mart Centrium starting at 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
