It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mrs. Hazel A. Horobetz, in the arms of her loving family, at Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at the age of 87 years. Hazel was born in Bienfait, Saskatchewan to Alfred and Verna Hamill, and lived throughout her childhood in Frobisher, Saskatchewan, where her Father delivered coal from the mines in Bienfait to farm and town homes. Later, he bought grain for the Federal Grain Company, and then ultimately retired from the Oilfield Trucking Business of Hamill and Messham Trucking, where they hauled crude oil and salt water when the oil boom of the 1950’s hit in southern Saskatchewan. Hazel married Carl Horobetz April 21, 1956, celebrating a sixty-three year marriage before Carl’s passing in 2019. They raised their four children, starting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Medicine Hat, Calgary, and finally settling in Red Deer in 1976. Hazel went to Business School in Regina, Saskatchewan, and worked at the Royal Bank before having children. She enjoyed curling and being the spectator in many other sports, including baseball and hockey. They lived in Winnipeg where their first three children were born, then moved to Medicine Hat, joining her family in the Dairy Queen business for several years in the mid ‘60’s. Hazel joined AGT in Calgary after the arrival of their youngest child, and later transferred to the Red Deer office, where she worked until she and Carl started their own Home Improvement business. Soon after the start of the business, she suffered a debilitating stroke on December 25, 1979, preventing her from working out of the home again. The effects of Mom’s stroke, while devastating to both her physical and mental wellness, did not stop her and her unbelievable determination to recover and persevere to regain her ability to walk independently, and live another 42 years. These years were not easy for her by any means, but her strength and determination to overcome the many obstacles she would face was absolutely amazing, proving her to be a force to be reckoned with. While her health prevented many things, watching and being part of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives gave her endless joy and happiness. As time progressed and the health challenges mounted, preventing more physical activity, Mom continued to enjoy her time with her Parkvale neighbors in their weekly card games and social gatherings, walks on the trails around her home, driving her scooter, and of course, the DQ treats enjoyed with her family. Her love of curling continued throughout her life, with Dad, and on her own, watching and sharing exciting games with us. Hazel will be forever cherished by her children, Donna Smith (Jeffrey), Dwayne, Maureen Riehl, and Alaine Martin (Fred Biberdorf); her eight grandchildren and her eleven great grandchildren. Hazel is also survived by her sister-in-law, Heather Hamill, and Carl’s siblings, Ernie Horobetz (Adele), Russ Horobetz (Delores), and her brother-in-law, Al Kruger. Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Carl, her parents, Alfred and Verna Hamill, a brother, Gordon Hamill, and Carl’s siblings, Charlotte Lowrey, Rudy Horobetz, Florence Bouchard, Helen Raymond, Rita Kruger and Carl’s parents, Nick and Annie Horobetz. A Memorial Service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. A Private Family Interment will follow later at the Red Deer Cemetery.
