vying for title of canada's most active

Red Deerians challenged to get active in June

May 31, 2022 | 1:28 PM

Local residents and organizations are encouraged to get active next month to help Red Deer earn the title of Canada’s most active community.

The ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge, which runs from June 1 to 30, aims to strengthen communities through physical activity and connection with others, while competing for bragging rights and a $100,000 grand prize for the winning municipality.

Move Your Mood, an Alberta Health Services program that promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyle practices, has received a grant from ParticipACTION to promote the Community Better Challenge. Throughout the month of June, Move Your Mood is partnering with the community to promote the challenge at the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre, Red Deer Native Friendship Society, Central Alberta Children’s Festival, the YMCA, and the Red Deer Public Library.

ParticipACTION will present the award to the community with the most active minutes logged during the challenge. Individuals, families and organizations can register at ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge and/or download the ParticipACTION app. Local participants can also win prizes by recording their activity on the app, or by taking photos of themselves being active and posting to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag #communitybetterreddeer.

ParticipACTION is a national non-profit organization that inspires and supports Canadians to make physical activity a vital part of their everyday life. As Canada’s premier physical activity brand, ParticipACTION works with its partners, which include organizations in the sport, physical activity and recreation sectors, alongside government and corporate sponsors, to help Canadians reduce sedentary time and move more through innovative engagement initiatives and thought leadership.

The original Move Your Mood program is designed to improve the mental health of children and youth by introducing them to activity. A postpartum Move Your Mood program helps new moms improve their mental health through group physical activity, connection and positive coping strategies. Move Your Mood school and family challenges are run during the year to encourage people to move together, cook and eat together, practise mindfulness and build positive coping strategies.
