George Johannson
1942 – 2022
It is with heavy hearts that the family of George Johannson announces his passing on May 15, 2022, just a few weeks before his 80th birthday. George passed away with family by his side at the Red Deer Hospice, following a courageous battle with cancer. Even in his final weeks, George maintained his sense of humour and mischievous smile.
George was born in Innisfail, Alberta. He was the fifth of six children born to his loving parents, Joe and Hazel. They had a wonderful childhood on the family farm near Markerville. George spent his younger years on the farm, where he learned to work hard and to cherish family time. George married Jennine in 1967 and made a home in Red Deer with her three daughters, Debra Armstrong (Nelson), Dannet Thomsen (Ken), and Daileen Hoffman (Randy) and they were blessed with a son, Brett Johannson (Kim). George was predeceased by Jennine in 1995. George married Cathy in 1998 and they shared many family times with her children, Jody Barrett (Shaun), Suzanne Koopmans (Brad), and Brent Fox. He was Grampie and Papa George to 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
George loved the outdoors. Camping, hunting and fishing were his passions. He was a talented country music singer and musician who had his own band called Country Gentlemen. He and his band performed at many community functions and also appeared on RD TV. Many had the privilege of enjoying his talents. George treasured trips that he and Cathy and their friends and family shared. George successfully ran Johannson Heating Ltd. for several years in Red Deer. Lots will remember him enjoying morning coffee at A&W with his buddies or happy hour with friends and family.
A celebration of life for close friends and family will be held at Festival Hall (4214 – 58 St. in Red Deer) on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
We would like to recognize and thank the staff at Red Deer Hospice for their amazing care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in George’s memory to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer AB, T4R 3S6, or online here.
Condolences for George’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
