Mrs. Maria ‘Rie’ Wilhelmina de Vos passed away at Timberstone Mews, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at the age of 93 years.
Rie, as she was known to her friends and family, was born on February 28, 1929, in Opmeer, North Holland. As a young woman looking for adventure, she went to live in England in 1951, for three and half years as a nanny. Returning to her homeland, she met, married and quickly immigrated in 1957, as newlyweds to Calgary, Alberta. There, the family grew to include three children, Nancy, Micheal, and Robert. In 1968, the family moved to Ashcroft, British Columbia and in 1975, once again, the family made a big move back to the Netherlands living in Hoorn, North Holland for almost two years. The whole family returned to Ashcroft, British Columbia, Canada in 1977.
Mom lived in Hanna briefly, and in Red Deer from 1985 to 2022, where she passed.
She was known to be a wonderful storyteller, telling of her experiences; it was always a pleasure listening to her. She was generous, kind and hospitable never wanting to let anyone feel left out. Mom was also a very good forgiver. Her strong faith as one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses not only carried her through the difficult times but brought her great joy! This is what inspired her to share her faith with almost everyone she met. She made friends easily and kept them.
Her final years were spent with loving caregivers at Timberstone Mews.
Rie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Nancy (Terry) Coates and her 2 sons, Benjamin (Amber) and her grandson, Joshua (Lauren) Nadeau; her son, Robert Sloove and his wife, Sherry. She leaves behind her sisters, Janny (Jaap) de Bood – de Vos and Elly Mooij – de Vos, and her brother, Jan (Renske) de Vos; as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces and a tremendous amount of friends, who will deeply miss her.
Rie was predeceased by her sister, Froukje Kort – de Vos and her son, Micheal Sloove, but lovingly remembered by his 2 sons Trevor and Jason (Yurina) Sloove, as well as their children. Five great grand children in total.
A Memorial Service will be held on Zoom on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. MST with Jade Kozowy Officiating. Zoom details to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Rie’s honor may be made directly to www.jw.org or to the Watchtower Society.
