Rebels shut out in first game loss to Oil Kings

In a highly anticipated game, the Red Deer Rebels lost their first game in round two of the WHL playoffs in a 4-0 shutout against the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place on Thursday night.

The Oil Kings and Rebels were the top two teams of the WHL’s Central Division during the regular season, with Edmonton finishing first in the division and second in the Eastern Conference, while the Rebels were just one place behind them in the Central Division and Eastern Conference.

In the first period, the Rebels’ Jackson van de Leest was sent to the box for interference at the 8:28 mark. The Oil Kings then seized the power play opportunity at 10:18 when Dylan Guenther scored his fifth goal of the playoffs on Rebels goaltender Chase Coward. Kaiden Guhle and Oil Kings goaltender Sebastian Cossa assisted on the play to make the score 1-0 Edmonton.

That’s where it would stay after 20 minutes of play, with the Oil Kings outshooting the Rebels 15-6.

The second period proved to be a difficult one for Red Deer as Edmonton’s Simon Kubicek scored the first of three goals for the Oil Kings during the period at 6:23. The goal was assisted by Justin Sourdif and made the score 2-0 Edmonton.

Then at 14:49, the Oil Kings’s Kaiden Guhle scored his third goal of the playoffs, with Jakub Demek and Shea Van Olm assisting on the play to widen Edmonton’s lead to 3-0.

Less than two minutes later, Edmonton’s Dawson Seitz scored his second goal of the playoffs at 16:43. Jake Neighbours and Luke Prokop earned the assists to make the score 4-0 Oil Kings.

Heading into the break after 40 minutes, Edmonton outshot Red Deer 12-8 in the second period for a two-period total of 27-14 in favour of the Oil Kings.

The Rebels also switched out goaltender Chase Coward and put in Connor Ungar for the final period.

The third period, however, saw no goals for either team but did see a few penalties including one that took out five players at once.

The final score was a 4-0 shutout for the Oil Kings and goaltender Sebastian Cossa.

The home team outshot the Rebels 8-4 in the third period and 35-18 overall.

Elsewhere, the Rebels went 0/2 on power play Thursday night, while the Oil Kings went 1/3 with the man advantage.

All three stars this evening went to the Oil Kings, with Jake Neighbours receiving the third star for his assist on the fourth goal. Dylan Guenther received the second star for his power play and game-winning goal. Kaiden Guhle received the first star for his one goal and one assist on the night.

Both teams will now head into Game 2 in their best-of-seven series in the second round of the WHL playoffs.

The Rebels and the Oil Kings will play again at Rogers Place on Saturday, May 7. Puck-drop is 7 p.m., with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
