Sherida Lynn Krips of Innisfail, Alberta passed away peacefully, with her children at her side, on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at the age of 76 years. Sherida was born on July 1, 1945 in Unity, Saskatchewan. Her father, Karl, marked the occasion in his journal noting, “A baby girl was born to us today.” Sherida was raised in Unity and was a precocious girl, once going to the Unity Herald to announce she was changing her name to Ruth. She was a talented skater performing in the elaborate costumes lovingly hand-sewn by her mother, Margaret. She was a brilliant pianist, playing challenging pieces, such as Korsakov’s, Flight of the Bumblebee without sheet music, but she also loved to entertain, with favorites such as These Boots Were Made for Walking. Her beauty and grace were legendary, and in 1962, she was crowned Carnival Queen by Unity’s Mayor.
Sherida graduated from Unity High School in 1963 and moved to Saskatoon where she graduated from Robertson’s Secretarial School, shortly before getting married to Elmer Messaros and starting a family. Sherida and Elmer made many moves before settling on a small acreage outside Bowden, where the family enjoyed horses, and Sherida rode her bicycle to work at the Bowden Institution. They moved to Innisfail in 1972, where Sherida worked as a legal secretary at Johnston, Miller, and Lehane and opened the Carrotstix Health Food Store in 1979. She was renowned for the Carrotstix parties she hosted. She took part in events such as the Polar Bear swim, Frosty Frolics, and served as the first female chair for the Innisfail Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed attending cultural events, and through the meaningful relationships she developed with the Indigenous community, she was bestowed the honorary title meaning South Wind. Sherida encouraged cultural exploration for her children as well.
Sherida moved to Edmonton on her own to start life as a single woman, in 1984. With her entrepreneurial spirit, she bought an early computer and started an editing company, PDQ Enterprises, earning her living typing and editing papers for university students. She made many good friendships during this time, enjoying debating the theories and concepts the students wrote about. In 1994, she took an adventurous trip to Seoul, Korea, to visit her daughter. Shortly after, Sherida moved to Kelowna for a few years to spend time with her son and granddaughter before returning to Innisfail, where she lived happily at Autumn Grove and Sunset Manor. She had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and made many new friends amongst the staff and residents. Sherida maintained her sense of humor, her kindness, her creativity, and her love of reading, politics, debate, and elegant clothes.
Sherida will be lovingly remembered by her son, James Messaros and her granddaughter, Mia of Kelowna, British Columbia and her daughter, Cindy Messaros and her grandchildren, William and Claire Bond of Innisfail, Alberta. She will also be sadly missed by her brother, Rodney Krips of Viking, Alberta; as well as her many good friends and family. Sherida was predeceased by her mother and father, Margaret and Karl Krips. We would like to thank the staff at Sunset Manor for loving and caring for my mom so faithfully. The family will be hosting a Celebration of Sherida’s Life in the coming months. If desired, Memorial Donations in Sherida’s honor may be made directly to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 5017 – 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4B2 or at www.cmha.ca.
