WHL holds Prospects Draft and U.S. Priority Draft lotteries

The Red Deer Rebels will select 14th and 31st in the upcoming Western Hockey League U.S. Priority Draft.

The WHL held the U.S. Priority Draft Lottery on Thursday, with Edmonton obtaining the first overall selection. All 22 clubs has equal opportunity to garner that pick.

Players eligible for the U.S. Priority Draft — to be held May 18, will be 2007-born and residing in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Players not selected will be eligible still for the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft on Thursday, May 19, or can be listed by a WHL Club at any time thereafter.

Last year, the Rebels selected Torrance, California-born defenceman Quentin Bourne with the 8th pick in the U.S. Priority Draft.

Bourne signed his first WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Rebels this week.

Red Deer also selected Jonah Jasser 37th overall. Jasser, who is from Flower Mound, Texas, remains unsigned.

In 2020, when the WHL held its first U.S. Priority Draft, the Rebels selected forward Minneapolis-born Gracyn Sawchyn 1st overall, but his rights were traded to Seattle in May 2021 for a future conditional second-round WHL draft pick.

Red Deer then selected forward and Minnesotan Aidan Willis with the 44th and final pick, but he also remains unsigned.

During the WHL Prospects Draft, Red Deer will select 17th overall.

Medicine Hat had the luck at that draft’s lottery today, grabbing the first overall selection. Tri-City and Victoria had an equal chance to get it along with the Tigers.

Players eligible for the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft will be 2007-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
