RDP Athletics Recap: March 3-6, 2022

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics Recap

It was another exciting weekend for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens. The RDP Kings Curling team won Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) gold and the Queens earned silver in Camrose.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team advanced to the ACAC Final Four with two solid wins. The Queens Basketball squad was downed in its quarter-final.

The Kings and Queens Volleyball teams won their matches and advanced to the ACAC Final Four.

The RDP Kings Hockey team dropped its quarter-final series and the Queens Hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a pair of wins. Here is a summary of what happened this week:

Kings Hockey | Friday, March 4 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Briercrest College Clippers took the first game 5-1 over the RDP Kings in the best-of-three quarter-final series. Camrose’s Jacob Kendall scored the lone goal for the Polytechnic.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, March 5 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Clippers captured the series with a 5-3 decision over the Kings. RDP’s Tyler Podgorenko, Kyle Salaway and Easton Haygarth found the back of the net.

Queens Basketball | Friday, March 4 | Medicine Hat College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team was downed 66-38 by the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in a division quarter-final. Sophie Melin, a Bachelor of Arts Psychology student, contributed 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals for the Queens.

Kings Basketball | Friday, March 4 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In an exciting double-overtime division quarter-final, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team defeated the Briercrest College Clippers 88-82. Tyronn King led the Polytechnic with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, March 5 | Lethbridge College

The RDP Kings downed the Kodiaks 86-76 in a division semi-final, advancing to the Final Four. Toronto’s King had a game high 27 points. Red Deer’s Cody White added 12 points.

Queens Volleyball | Sunday, March 6 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a division semi-final, the first place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens defeated the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in four sets (25-14, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-23). North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game Kaylee Domoney was solid defensively, accumulating nine digs and four assists. “Kaylee is our rock. You have to build everything off a good foundation,” said Chris Wandler, Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball Interim Head Coach. “That’s exactly what she is and the girls thrive off of that.” For more details about this home win, please read the game recap.

Kings Volleyball | Sunday, March 6 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDP Kings swept the SAIT Trojans (25-20, 25-22 and 25-16) in a south semi-final and booked a spot in the ACAC Final Four. North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game Maddux Greves (32 assists) was strong from the service line, recording five aces. “It feels like it was our most complete match against a good opponent,” explained Aaron Schulha, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball Head Coach. “It was the perfect time to do it. We have a lot of belief within our group.”

Curling | ACAC Championships | March 5-6 | U of A Augustana

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Curling team won gold at the ACAC Championships. The Queens picked up silver along with many awards. More information can be found online. Queens Hockey | Thursday, March 3 | Olds College The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team blanked the Broncos 3-0 on the road. Madison Sansom, Natalie Buttle and Jailyn Bablitz scored for the Queens. Goaltender Tanya Disotell Dunsmore made 18 saves to record the shutout.

Queens Hockey | Friday, March 4 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In the final regular season game, the RDP Queens dropped the Olds College Broncos 2-1, solidifying first place and a trip to the finals. RDP’s Alesha Santos and Camryn Wallan found the back of the net. Izzy Palumbo made 22 saves and recorded the win in net.
