Rebels maintain dominance on eastern road trip against Pats

The Red Deer Rebels are making their eastern road trip worthwhile, beating the Regina Pats 3-2 Friday night at the Brandt Centre.

Stretching their win streak now to seven games, this is the second time the Rebels have beat the Pats on this current unbeaten streak, with Regina being one of only two teams the Rebels remain undefeated against this season, the other being the Swift Current Broncos.

In true Rebels fashion, the team hit the scoreboard first when Talon Brigley scored his fourth goal this season on Pats netminder Drew Sim at 18:31 of the opening period. Dallon Melin and Frantisek Formanek assisted on the play.

After 20 minutes of play, the Rebels outshot the Pats 11-9.

The second period proved to be more of a challenge when Regina’s Stanislav Svozil scored his ninth goal of the season on Rebels goaltender Connor Ungar. Jakob Brook and Zane Rowan assisted at 6:25.

With the score now tied 1-1, the Rebels’ Kalan Lind brought the team back in the lead when he scored his 12^th goal of the WHL season after Regina’s Jakob Brook was sent to the box for holding. The power play goal at 11:02 was assisted by Ben King and Christoffer Sedoff.

Then, just over one minute later, Lind scored a back-to-back goal making it his second of the game and 13^th of the season, with Talon Brigley and Christoffer Sedoff assisting at 12:25. It gave the Rebels a 3-1 lead and later proved to be the game winner.

Shots on goal were 11-7 Red Deer in the second period, for a two-period total of 22-16 in favour of the Rebels after 40 minutes.

Regina managed the only goal of the third period when Tye Spencer scored his fifth goal of the season at 14:03, with Connor Bedard getting the assist to make the score 3-2 Red Deer.

With just under a minute left to play, the Pats pulled their goalie but were unable to score with the extra attacker, keeping it a 3-2 final.

Regina outshot Red Deer 8-7 in the third period, but the Rebels outshot the Pats overall 29-24.

On the power play, Red Deer went 1/3 while Regina went 0/4 with the man advantage.

The game’s third star went to the Rebels’ Christoffer Sedoff for his two assists on the night, while the second star went to Regina’s Stanislav Svozil for his goal this evening. The first star went to Red Deer’s Kalan Lind for his two goal performance in the second period, including the game winning goal.

The seventh straight win for the Rebels puts their record at 36-15-2-1 with 75 points, while the loss for the Pats puts them at 20-27-2-1 with 43 points.

The Rebels will be playing one last game out east against the Saskatoon Blades Saturday night. Faceoff is 6 p.m. MT at the SaskTel Centre with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
