Abandoned building in Riverside Meadows goes up in flames

Investigators are looking into the cause of a blaze that destroyed an abandoned building in Red Deer’s Riverside Meadows Sunday night.

Acting fire chief Chris Kearns says Red Deer Emergency Services was called to the scene just after 8 p.m. in response to a building on fire near 59 St. & 51 Ave.

Kearns says crews arrived to find the building in flames, but it wasn’t until after 9 p.m. that the fire was under control. Crews remained on scene Monday as the persistent smoldering fire continued to burn throughout the night.

Kearns says the cause of the fire remains unknown, as does the point of origin for the fire. There were no injuries.

Kearns adds, that once the smoke has been cleared, the investigation will continue inside the building. For now, however, he says the building has been deemed not safe to enter.
