Red Deer ringette squad looking for golden end to near-perfect season

A local ringette squad is looking to cap off its amazing season in style this weekend.

The Red Deer Ringette U10 Rush, who call themselves the Wolfpack, and have players from Red Deer and Sylvan Lake, have compiled a most impressive record of 30-1-1.

The team has also lived up to its billing, starting the season with one of the top average evaluation scores of all teams.

“The core of the group have been playing together since they were five-years-old,” says Myles Peake, head coach. “These girls have learned the sport together and now it’s starting to show through their dominant game play. Combine that with the younger girls that have come in and now we have all the pieces in place for a great team.”

The Wolfpack play in Step 3 of the Black Gold League, the highest level for their age group.

This season, they played teams from Spruce Grove, St. Albert. Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park and Edmonton, as well as their rivals, the Lightning Bolts from Lacombe.

It was Lacombe who handed Red Deer its only loss this season, and in their final regular season game.

Included in their success was a perfect 12-0 run through three tournaments, including the Turkey Ring in St. Albert in October, the Friends on Ice tourney in Red Deer, and recently the Sweetheart Tournament — one of Alberta’s largest — in Spruce Grove.

The Wolfpack will now play in what’s sure to be a grueling league championship playoff tournament this weekend (Feb. 26-27), with matchups against the Spruce Grove Ice Devils, St. Albert Night Wolves, Edmonton Ring Robbers, and the Lacombe Lightning Bolts.

The top two teams after round robin play advance to the final.

While he expects his team to make said final, anything can happen says Peake.

“When we play the other teams in the league, we are the target. We are the team everyone wants to beat. We are always playing teams that are ready for us and playing with 110 per cent intensity. We always have to show up at 120 per cent to play and the girls have proven they can do that throughout the season,” he says.

“It is unbelievable how each and every single girl on this team shows up and puts in hard work every single time, either at practice or for a game. It’s remarkable, and I’m lucky to coach such an amazing group of athletes.”
