2022 Red Deer Winter Carnival underway this weekend

Feb 25, 2022 | 2:58 PM

For the past several years the French-Canadian Association of Alberta (ACFA) has been hosting a Winter Carnival in Red Deer during the months of February or March to celebrate French-Canadian traditions along with other winter activities.

This year’s Winter Carnival starts Friday Feb. 25 at 6:00 p.m. and will run until 10:00 p.m.. The Carnival’s second and final day resumes on Saturday, Feb. 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. running until 6:30 p.m..

Festivities planned include live music, dance, and traditional sugar-time foods like pea soup, sugar pie, maple taffy, and more. Decorations will be added to enhance the winter theme and to help create special memories.

To allow for more space and activities to take place, this year’s Winter Carnival is being held at Bower Ponds. At Bower Ponds, there is lots of open area so more visitors can attend the Carnival and partake in many activities that require more room, and more room of course, means more fun, say organizers.

Most activities will be available on Feb. 26, as they require more prep time like axe throwing. For Friday evening, Feb. 25, there will be a dance performance at 7:00 p.m., followed by some fireworks at 8:00 p.m. where you can sit around a fire, take some photos, and grab something to eat from the Bower Ponds Pavillion while listening to tunes a DJ will provide.

Saturday’s free activities feature:

  • Axe Throwing
  • Street Hockey
  • Foosball Table (Human Size)
  • Snowshoeing
  • Para-Hockey Sleds to try out
  • Fat Tire E-bikes
  • Sledding
  • Ice Skating (Skate rentals available at Bower Ponds Pavillion)
  • Painting on the Snow
  • And more….

A Small but interactive music venue includes performances by:

  • Les Bûcherons/ The Lumberjacks (Four classes on how to play spoons) One wonderful show.
  • 15:00 Dance with Ivan Touko

Food will also be available on Saturday. Some of the tasty treats include:

  • Maple Taffy on Snow
  • Pea Soup
  • Sugar Pie
  • And more…

Ice skating will be available for both days of the event, depending on ice thickness. If you have skates, you’re encouraged to bring them.
