Red Deer woman wins $250,000 Daily Grand lottery

A local Red Deer woman won a much larger prize than she ever imagined this week.

When Estela Alvarenga checked her Daily Grand ticket she was surprised to see the number 250 flash across her screen. She was even more surprised when she took her ticket to a store to double-check her win and discovered she had actually won $250,000 on the January 17 draw.

“I scanned my ticket on the Lotto Spot app,” she said. “I thought I won $250, which would have been great, too.”

“When I got to the store and saw that it was actually $250,000, well, I couldn’t believe it,” she continued. “I still can’t believe it!”

The winner said she has started to think about what to do with her windfall.

“I would love to buy a house in El Salvador,” she said. “It would be great for my family to have a place to stay when they travel back and forth.”

“I’m also going to pay my mortgage down a little bit,” she continued. “And I’d like to share some of the money with my family.”

Alvarenga purchased her winning Daily Grand ticket at Red Deer Lottery and Cleaning, located at 5016 51 Avenue in Red Deer. She split the game’s second-highest prize with another ticket purchased somewhere in Manitoba by matching all five main draw numbers – 6, 16, 42, 45 and 46.
