Red Deer artist creates sculpture for grand opening event in Calgary

A Red Deer artist put his talents to work recently by providing a unique marble carving to a special event held in Calgary last weekend.

Bill Harvey, of Red Deer, offered his sculpture, “Creating a Champion” to the grand opening of a new outdoor rink in Calgary’s Parkdale neighbourhood Jan. 29.

Harvey says the project was a long time coming after he wrote a book called, “Creating a Champion”.

He says the project started when he was doing some wood carvings in British Colombia and thought to himself, how wonderful Michelangelo was, and what he did with hammers and chisels.

“If he can do that, what can I do with modern power tools?” pondered Harvey.

Harvey says the marble used to create the sculpture came from Vancouver Island, which was transported to Red Deer, where Harvey then spent the next year carving it.

“I was counting the hours up to 1200, when COVID hit. It was hard to maintain my motivation and with that, it was an estimated time in between 15-16 hundred hours,” he admits.

Upon hearing of the new outdoor rink project in Calgary, Harvey offered event organizers his Creating a Champion marble sculpture for the occasion, which was happily accepted.
