Aspen Lakes West chosen as site for new Catholic elementary school in Blackfalds
Following an update provided to council at its meeting Dec. 14, the Town of Blackfalds has announced that Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) is hoping to receive funding for another elementary school in Blackfalds.
As the existing school, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is at capacity, Town administration has been working with RDCRS over the past year to look for a suitable parcel for a new elementary school. Officials say seven possible locations were assessed in various areas of the community that met the primary requirements.
A four-hectare site in Aspen Lakes West was chosen by both parties as to the preferred site and the Town is currently said to be completing negotiations on the acquisition of the land affected.
Officials note that a new elementary school in Blackfalds remains a top capital plan priority for RDCRS and they are optimistic that a funding announcement from the Province will be forthcoming this spring.
