Red Deer blaze destroys garage, damages duplex

Jan 3, 2022 | 2:52 PM

Investigators are looking into the cause of fire that destroyed a garage and damaged a home in Red Deer’s Kentwood neighbourhood Sunday night.

Tyler Pelke, Deputy Chief, Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES), says crews were called to the scene on Keen Crescent shortly before 6:30 p.m. and found a single detached garage in behind a duplex, fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

“The garage was destroyed, but a little bit of damage, siding damage, on the house itself,” he explains. “But all the residents were back in by the end of the event. No indication of what caused it.”

Pelke points out, two residents were inside each half of the duplex at the time of the fire but were not injured, nor were any firefighters on scene. He further shares that no one was inside the garage at the time, estimating the damage at roughly $50,000 as it did contain a vehicle.

“We were there about an hour, hour and a half. They were able to get everything under control pretty quickly,” says Pelke.

“Key messaging for us, especially at this time of year, carbon monoxide detectors, making sure your checking your furnaces, and exhausts, those kinds of things. Everything is really cold outside, so there’s a lot of ice buildup,” says Pelke. “Block heater cords, those kinds of things. I’m not suggesting that’s what this was at all, but making sure your cords aren’t frayed, and making sure the connections are right as well.”
