Icefields Parkway closed due to avalanche danger

Alberta’s Icefields Parkway is closed due to avalanche danger.

Jasper National Park announced the closure Thursday morning.

“Significant snowfall, accompanied by blowing and drifting snow and strong winds continues along the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) south of Jasper today,” the park says.

“Parks Canada has now closed the highway from Athabasca Falls to Saskatchewan River Crossing due to evaluated avalanche risk.”

The highway will likely not reopen until Friday evening (Dec. 24) at the earliest to allow for avalanche control work to be completed.
