A number of local non-profits stand to benefit from several grant applications approved by Red Deer County council on Tuesday.

Marking the 15^th year of the Capital Assistance Grants program, council approved $300,000 in Rural Community Facility Assistance Grants to be distributed to all 18 organizations who applied.

The program assists non-profit community groups and organizations in their capital projects such as repair, maintenance, or enhancement of their existing facilities, whether recreational, cultural or community, to enhance the quality of life of all Red Deer County residents.

Grants are between $1,000 and $100,000 with this year’s applications exceeding the $300,000 total by $23,499.67. Projects ranged from construction of outdoor skating rinks, to indoor renovations, painting, and more.

The Red Deer Titans Rugby Football Club applied for a grant of $80,000 out of a $91,452 project to purchase and install a playground unit, site costs, surrounding chain link fence and irrigation sprinkler. As this year’s applications were over budget, council accepted the recommendation of a $63,945.18 grant amount instead.

Since 2007, Red Deer County has provided over $3.3 million in capital funding, raised through volunteer work, partnerships, and additional municipal and provincial dollars.

Council also approved going forward with a Joint Quality Management Plan for Red Deer County, the Town of Bowden, Village of Elnora and now Village of Delburne.

The Village of Delburne, like the others listed, is an accredited municipality with the administrative responsibility of Alberta’s Safety Codes Act.

Currently, the Village of Delburne’s Quality Management Plan (QMP) relates to five disciplines for inspection: building, gas, electrical, plumbing, and fire.

Under a Joint QMP, while Delburne would remain independent from the other municipalities, responsibility will be shifted from the Village Chief Administrative Officer to Red Deer County’s Manager. All businesses in the village would as well be put on a regular inspection schedule.

The Joint QMP would come into effect Jan. 1, 2022.
