Sandra Ann Black
August 28, 1948 – November 11, 2021
We regret to announce the passing of Sandi Black on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at the age of 73.
Sandi was born on August 28, 1948 in St John, New Brunswick to Dorothy and Howard Thorne. On January 8, 1966, she married Bill Black. They shared their life together starting in New Brunswick and moving west to Tumbler Ridge, BC before settling in for retirement in Red Deer, AB. Together they had four children, Lori, Roger, Keith and Nova-Lee.
Sandi was known as many things throughout her long and full life. She was a wife, a mother, a friend and a support to anyone who needed her. While Sandi married young and started a family, she was always determined. She showcased this determination by going back to school at the age of 26 to get her high school diploma. Though her most notable job was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she also worked as a receptionist at Quintette Coal Mine for 10 years and then later at Western Canadian Coal for 3.
Sandi was known for her love of cooking, baking, Easter and Christmas. She also loved to golf and play cards. She was a card shark who loved a good game. Sandi was always smiling and sharing her infectious laugh that would fill everyone within earshot with joy. One of her favorite past times was singing along to the radio and if Conway was on then she could even be caught dancing. Through her life, she spent her time attending the sporting events of all her children and grandchildren. She was also the peacekeeper in the family, always telling everyone they were the favorite and number one in her heart.
While the disease, Alzheimer’s, may have slowed her down, it never stopped her wit or dulled her shine. Even through her hardest days, Sandi was always there to offer you some (very) honest advice and a hug when you needed it. She was who she was until her last day. Though Sandi may be gone, her words and actions will live on forever in the lives of everyone who knew her. One of her famous lines being, “No Lying, Cheating or Stealing”.
Sandi was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy, her father, Howard, her niece, Alicia, and her granddaughter, Caitlin. She is survived by her husband Bill, her brother, John and his wife Joanne, her four children and their spouses, Lori and Neil, Roger and Trina, Keith and Breanne, and Nova-Lee and Drisdel. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kelsey, Brittany, Dillon, Alektra, Ashton, Ruby, Carter, and Jaxson and her great granddaughter Charlee as well as countless nieces and nephews.
The celebration of life will be held at the Red Deer Funeral Home in Red Deer, Alberta on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. Sandi will be taken back to be buried with her parents in New Brunswick later this year. The family is asking in lieu of flowers that a memorial donation be made to The Alzheimer’s Society in her honor.
