Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics is proud to announce the RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Justine Larson – Queens Cross Country Running

Hometown – Strathmore, AB. Bachelor of Education Elementary (1st year)

Strathmore’s Justine Larson (26:54) had a strong race at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Cross Country Running Championships on Saturday. In only her first season on the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, Larson has been one of the team’s leaders.

In Camrose, the Bachelor of Education Elementary student led her team to a bronze medal finish, placing ninth among conference female participants over 6 km. She was only 11 seconds behind seventh spot, which would have sealed a spot on the All-Conference team.

Larson works diligently to improve her fitness and times, and consistently contributes to the betterment of the team and Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running program.

Larson and her teammates will compete at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships in Calgary on November 13.

2. Kristofer Grobmeier – Kings Soccer

Hometown – Red Deer, AB. Bachelor of Education Secondary (2nd year)

Kristofer Grobmeier played an instrumental role in helping the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team earn ACAC bronze.

With seconds ticking down in the bronze medal showdown against the Lakeland College Rustlers, the second-year defender from Red Deer converted a rebound into the back of the Rustlers’ net, evening the contest 2-2. The game went to penalty kicks where the Kings scored on all five attempts, while the Rustlers missed one opportunity. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings celebrated ACAC bronze with an incredible come from behind victory.

Throughout the match, the Bachelor of Education Secondary student was a rock on defence. Grobmeier effectively distributed the ball to his teammates and was a catalyst initiating the push to tie the game.
