It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Keith Alan Hamer on October 10, 2021 at the Red Deer Hospice. Born February 16, 1956 in Calgary, Alberta to Ken and Irene Hamer, Keith spent most of his childhood on Vancouver Island with his sisters Donna-Marie and Karen. He talked of numerous camping trips under the stars. He moved to Grande Prairie, AB and in April 1979 he began a 40 year long career at the pulp and paper mill. Keith married the love of his life, Penny in January of 1984. Together they raised 7 children and were heavily involved in their local church, leading worship and working in the sound department, and always involved in the community. He started and chaired the Royal Oaks Neighbourhood Association. He loved his neighbours like family. Keith and the family loved to camp, hike, bike ride, toboggan, cross country ski and fish. Over the years Keith and Penny traveled both for leisure and did mission work together. Two of their greatest memories were trips to Disneyland and Disney World with their kids. They made three, 49 day motorcycle trips on his beloved “Illusion Red” Honda Goldwing 1800. They pulled their little tent trailer behind that bike and enjoyed the West Coast USA, The Redwood Forest, South Dakota and the Black Hills. They went on cruise ships, helicopters, sail boats, caving, horseback riding and loved pulling their trailer on many trips. The last 2 winters they stayed in their RV in Victoria and loved every moment they had together. Keith loved music and all his sound and video equipment, but his favorite time was when he was with with his family. He hunted elk, moose, and bear and had many a great adventure with friends and his dear brother (in-law) Roger. They were always told they looked like brothers and they were in EVERY way brothers. His sense of adventure and free spirit, coupled with an intense work ethic and deep integrity, made him a mentor to many; both at work and in his personal life. Keith loved the Lord. His life was a walking example of Jesus Christ everyday. He didn’t preach it; he lived it. He is now in his eternal home, with the Lord. He was predeceased by his parents Ken and Irene and his eldest son Daniel. Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife Penny, sons Justin (Ada), Michael and Keith Jr, daughters Eve (David), Dee (Everett) and Bethany (Nick), his grandchildren Dakota, Tygart, Amaraya, William, Rhett, Bankz, Hunter, Katie and Sera, and his great-granddaughter Brynlee, sisters Donna-Marie and Karen, dear friend Barb Phillipson, brother- and sister-in-law Roger & Judy, sister-in-law Pat, brother-in-law Greg and numerous dearly loved nieces and nephews. Keith will be missed by ‘fun seekers’, family, friends and ‘comrades’ too numerous to mention. All who he loved like brothers and family. His legacy will echo through time and his memory will be a blessing. Due to current Covid restrictions the family will host a celebration of Keith’s life in the spring or summer of 2022. Details will be announced at that time. The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at the Red Deer hospital for their care of Keith. And a heartfelt thank you goes out to the nurses and staff at the Red Deer Hospice Society who lovingly cared for Keith in his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made in Keith’s honour to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 – Arnot Avenue, Red Deer AB T4R 3S6. Condolences to Keith’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
