Pre-trial motions underway for man charged in death of local doctor

Oct 4, 2021 | 2:24 PM

Pre-trial applications began in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench Monday for a man charged in the murder of a local doctor last year.

Deng Mabiour, 55, is charged with first-degree murder, assault with a weapon, and assault of a police officer in the Aug. 10, 2020 killing of Dr. Walter Reynolds at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic in Red Deer.

A five-day voir dire scheduled to run until Friday, aims to determine whether statements Mabiour gave to police following his arrest at the scene, are able to be used by the Crown as evidence against him during his upcoming trial, and if they were offered voluntarily.

Mabiour is scheduled to have a four-week jury trial Nov. 22-Dec. 17, 2021.
