Erling Jonson

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Erling Jonson, but it is with the assurance that Erling has been called home to be with his Lord.
Erling was born in Meeting Creek, Alberta. His mother Elise and his father Seth moved from Sweden to Meeting Creek, where Erling was raised on a farm with his three brothers Einar, Walter and Thorsten. He married Jeanette Beckman on August 23, 1958.
Erling’s life was founded on faith in Christ. His church community was a vital part of his family life. Erling was a team player and in younger years enjoyed hunting, playing baseball, hockey and curling but loved all sports and board games. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor’s of Education and taught high school math and physics with enthusiasm and a genuine love for his students. Many struggling students found Mr. Jonson would give tirelessly to help them solve math problems.
In retirement, Erling continued to tutor and provide assistance to many students in the community. Erling was hard working and loved the challenge of working with his hands and on his farm near Lacombe. Many friends benefitted from Erling’s carpentry skills. He will be remembered by friends for his great sense of humour and his quick quips.
Erling will be deeply missed by his wife Jeanette, his children Byron (Jodie) and Sheila (Dan) and grandchildren, David, Elise, Kyle, Erik, Aanika and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Eliana, brother Thorsten (Cordella), brother-in-law David (Sandra) and sister-in-law, Joyce , nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his grandson Ryan and brothers Walter and Einar.
A memorial service will be held later this month with Deer Park Alliance Church providing a livestream for community attendance. Internment and a community remembrance will be held in late summer at Meeting Creek, Alberta.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Deer Park Alliance Church, 2960 – 39 Street, Red Deer AB, T4R 2G2, or online here; or the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary AB, T2E 2P5, or online here.
