“The Future Is Now”

Blackfalds officially recognizes Black History Month

Town council has officially proclaimed February as Black History Month in Blackfalds.

Alberta officially recognized Black History Month in 2017 – becoming the fourth Canadian province to do so formally. This year’s theme is “The Future Is Now” and pays tribute to the transformative work that Black Canadians and their communities are doing now.

This is the first year that the Town of Blackfalds has proclaimed Black History Month. A news release says council and administration feel it is important to bring these events and issues to light and encourage equality and respect for everyone.

“History is very important, as is recognizing Black history. We can learn so much from [all the information] that is being put out – the opportunity for citizens to learn is immense,” Mayor Richard Poole stated during council’s meeting on Tuesday.
