Mary Pence of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away at her home, Covenant Care – Villa Marie on December 2, at the age of 93 years. Mary was born in Lethbridge Alberta, and as a young child moved with her family to homestead a farm near Smith, Alberta where she remained until as a very young teenager she moved to Nanton and Turner Valley to earn her living and attend school. She worked in and around Nanton throughout her teen years where she met her first great love, Roy Shaw, Mary and Roy raised their three children, Dona, Joy and Vern in Nanton until their marriage dissolved. During her time in Nanton as a young wife and mother, she was active in the Girl Guide movement and for many years was a brown owl, and a district commissioner. She was also very active in the Royal Canadian Legion, and was a ‘hockey mom’. Later she met her second great love, Don Pence. Mary and Don had some great adventures during their many years together, they lived in Arizona , Pine Lake Alberta, Lund BC, Powell River, BC, and following it up with their final move to Red Deer where they remained for the remainder of their lives, and where Mary was active in Eastern Star. Mary embraced his grown children, Wally, Roy and Lee as her own. She did not distinguish between any of ‘her’ children or their children and grandchildren loving them and treating them all as her own. As the eldest of six children she was the much loved Auntie to many nieces and nephews, teaching them to play cards and always lending a sympathetic ear and great advice whenever it was needed. She wasn’t one to sugar coat her words and everyone, family or friends always knew exactly what she thought. Mary made very good friends wherever she went. She could make a home of any space she occupied, and was always ready to share a drink, a cup of tea or a meal with anyone who dropped in. She loved to dance and tell jokes and in her home there was always a deck of cards waiting to be used and the best of friends became the opponent immediately that the shuffle was begun!
Her hugs will be sadly missed by her loving family at Villa Marie as well as her loving family.
