Alberta sets another record with 919 new COVID-19 cases

COVID numbers shared Saturday afternoon by Alberta Health show there were at least 919 new infections confirmed in the last 24 hours.

That’s a new daily record for Alberta, with the previous high being 802, set on Nov. 5.

The province also confirmed five new deaths bringing the death toll to 357.

Data shared today is subject to change and is partial as the province continues to work through technical issues with its database.

Other numbers — up to date as of Wednesday when the technical issues began — show 6,822 active cases in the province, and 63 in Red Deer.

Current data also shows 171 people are in hospital with 33 of those in ICU.

A similar update is anticipated for Sunday, with more detailed data projected for Monday.

On Friday, Premier Jason Kenney announced new measures to try and halt the recent surge of cases in the province.

Residents in all communities under watch status — which includes Red Deer — are not to attend gatherings of more than 15 people. Albertans are also advised to not have more than three cohorts, and masks are strongly recommended in the workplace where distancing is not possible.

Ponoka County, which has 40 active cases, or 145.6 per 100,000 people, is also on watch status. Red Deer’s current rate per 100,000 people is 59.5.

Watch status is implemented when a community has at least 10 active cases, and 50 active cases per 100,000 people.

On Saturday, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School also reported a case of COVID-19 involving an individual from its community.

A letter from Principal Chris Good says school administration has contacted parents/guardians, as well as staff and visitors, who may have been in close contact with the case in that school.
