Red Deer up to 63 active COVID-19 cases

Red Deer added three more active cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday for a total of 63, according to the latest online update from Alberta Health.

There have been 163 recoveries in the city, up eight from Tuesday, and the total number of cases has reached 225, an increase of seven.

With an active case rate of 59.5 per 100,000 Red Deer remains under a provincial COVID-19 Watch.

Alberta confirmed 515 cases on Wednesday out of 7,461 test results, bringing the total to 30,447. Of those, 6,230 cases are active and 23,874 people have recovered.

The province confirmed six more deaths with three in the Calgary Zone, two in the Edmonton Zone, and one in the South Zone. To date, 343 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 164 patients are currently hospitalized with 30 of them in intensive care units.

Red Deer County dropped two active cases and now sits with five. Sylvan Lake added another active case and now has seven.

Lacombe County remains with three active cases of COVID-19 and the city of Lacombe added one for a total of six.

Rocky Mountain House has four active cases as of Wednesday, a decrease of two.

Ponoka County dropped seven active cases for a total of 42, but remains under a COVID-19 Watch with an active case rate of 145.6 per 100,000.

A COVID-19 outbreak was declared for Normandeau School on Wednesday after two cases were confirmed in individuals from the school. Normandeau becomes the 12^th school in Red Deer to have confirmed cases of the virus. Ten schools have reported one case each while Hunting Hills High School has had five cases resulting in a COVID-19 outbreak being declared.

Schools in Maskwacis are back open this week after being closed for the previous three in a bid to help prevent further community spread of the virus. No cases of COVID-19 have been reported at any of the 11 schools within the Maskwacis Education Schools Authority.

A COVID-19 Watch is also in effect for Kneehill County where there are 12 active cases (110 per 100,000).

Mountain View County has seven active cases as of Wednesday and Olds has three.

The Central Zone has 224 active cases and three hospitalizations as of Wednesday.

Also as of Wednesday, six employees who work at Drumheller Institution have tested positive for COVID-19. Correctional Services Canada says that one has since recovered and five are self-isolating at home. The positions of the infected employees were not disclosed for privacy reasons. There are currently no reported positive cases of COVID-19 among inmates at Drumheller Institution. Contact tracing efforts are underway.

Three employees at Bowden Institution tested positive for COVID-19 last week.
