Man sentenced for police chase ending in field near Sylvan Lake

Oct 2, 2020 | 10:43 AM

A man charged following a police chase that ended in a farm field near Sylvan Lake this summer will spend the next year behind bars.

The series of events on July 3 started at around 4:30 p.m. when RCMP in Rocky Mountain House spotted a man wanted on outstanding warrants driving a vehicle with two women also inside.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle in a parking lot when it rammed two police vehicles and a civilian vehicle, and also struck an RCMP member in the leg before fleeing.

The vehicle was pursued along gravel roads eastbound towards Sylvan Lake, avoiding several spike belts along the way.

After about an hour, police say the vehicle attempted to drive across a farmer’s field off Highway 781, south of Highway 11, but became stuck. That’s where the three occupants were arrested and a loaded shotgun was recovered from inside the vehicle.

Cole Joseph Obdam, 20, was sentenced on Sept. 23 for flight from police, assaulting a peace officer, and two counts of mischief over $5,000. He was given 17 months in jail, minus five months’ credit for time spent in custody, leaving him 12 months left to serve. Obdam was also banned from driving for one year upon his release.

Nycole Martin, 29, is due in Rocky Mountain House provincial court on Oct. 21. Ashton Lukenbill, 24, remains at large and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.
