It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Unrau, at Red Deer Regional Hospital on September 15, 2020 at the age of 59 years. Harold was born March 10, 1961 in Winnipeg to Henry and Mary Unrau. From Winnipeg, their family moved to BC, where they lived first in Chilliwack and then Yarrow, before coming back to Manitoba to live in Elm Creek, Katrime and finally MacGregor. In his late teens, Harold moved from his parents’ house and lived on his own, finding employment at Carnation Foods in Carberry. He lived in Austin with his former spouse, Janice Unrau, and his children Tiffany (1980) and Trevor (1983). In 1990 the family bought a farm a few miles out of Austin, where Harold could often be found working with his cattle, mending fences and farm machinery, baling hay and riding horses with his daughter, Tiffany, all while continuing to work full time outside of the home. Harold was given the opportunity to apprentice for the trade of Millwright through his job at Carnation, and jumped at the chance, earning him both his journeyman’s ticket and a place in the maintenance department at work. In 1999, he left his job and worked for a year at Sperling Industries before heading out west again with his son and setting up residence in Sylvan Lake, AB. He worked hard at jobsites in Alberta, but also enjoyed boating and fishing with his son, Trevor. In 2003 Harold had a workplace accident that prevented him from continuing with Millwright work, and soon after he moved into Red Deer. Harold has always been someone who loves the outdoors, whether he was working under the hood of his truck, horseback riding, fishing, camping, sitting on a deck or around a bonfire teasing his friends.
Harold is survived by his son Trevor Unrau and his daughter Tiffany (Steven) Verwey, and his grandchildren Jordan, Tennyson, Mitchell and Elliot, as well as his mom Mary Unrau, his brother Hank (Sandy) Unrau and his children Marley and Darnell, his sister Marie Dunn (Ron Rispler) and her sons John and Chris, his sister Bev (Stu) Schoenberger and her daughters Brittaney and Marilyn, as well as several great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Frank and his father, Henry Unrau. A private graveside service will be held at Froese Cemetery near Altona, MB at a later date.
