One Good Week

Spray Parks soft open a splashing success

After five years in the making, the Rocky Mountain House Spray Park held a soft opening on Sept. 16 and managed to stay open for a week before closing Sept. 21 to be winterized.

An official grand opening is tentatively set for May Long Weekend 2021, weather permitting, to coincide with the opening of the new Co-operative Park.

Town officials say public opinion on the new spray park has been overwhelmingly positive on social media with many grateful to the Rocky Spray Park Committee and the Town of Rocky.

Children were even able to enjoy warmer water thanks the nearby building that houses a heating system to warm water up to 18-20 degrees.

Director of Recreation and Community Services Wes Amendt stated during very busy days next summer will be a good test of the system.

“We are the first heated flow through system in Canada and possibly North America.”

Some individuals using the spray park found it difficult to change clothing as there is no facility in the immediate vicinity to do so. The nearby mechanical building for the park has been plumbed in for the possibility of a future expansion, but as of now there are no plans to do so.

Amendt noted that next year they plan to provide portable toilets while directing people to the nearby Lou Soppit Centre or to the Christenson Sports & Wellness Centre for washrooms that are both within walking distance.

While the area is closed for the season, contractors will be continuing work on the building as well as finishing the surrounding sod, which in turn will be the eventually removal of the surrounding orange fencing.

Although no lighting is present as of yet, part of the Rocky’snew video surveillance project, security cameras will be installed to deter vandalism on the Town’s newest asset.
