With sadness, but with appreciation for a long, full life, we announce the passing of our mother Helen (Bunty) Olsen (nee Johnston) of Torrington on August 22 at the age of 94.
Born in Scotland on Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) 1925, mom grew up in the village of Ellon, a short distance from Aberdeen. She came to Canada in 1946 as a war bride, settling in Calgary where she and her husband Stan built their own home at the then edge of the city (20 Avenue NE) and raised five boisterous children. In 1977 Mom and Dad moved to Linden so Dad could pursue his dream of opening his own business and finally retired to Torrington in 2002.
Mom always worked hard: her hands were never idle — whether sewing, knitting, or baking. She loved socializing over a good game of bridge or crib. Wherever she lived, she believed it was important to contribute to the community. She was very proud of being a life member of the Legion where she organized countless crib tournaments and stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of our veterans. She volunteered many hours with the Calgary Foothills and later Olds Hospital Auxiliaries. In her later years she enjoyed chatting with the many visitors to the Gopher Hole Museum. Her strong convictions were shown in her lifelong involvement in both provincial and federal politics. She worked tirelessly in the 60s and 70s to support the PC party, and we still remember her jubilation when Peter Lougheed secured a majority in 1971.
Bunty was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Stan, her son Jim, and her daughter Leslie. She is survived by her son Alan; her daughters Joanne Biegun and Darlene Kerr (Herman Friesen); three grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; her cherished sister-in-law Norma Brady and her son Lindsey (Beth); her brother Charlie (Margaret) Johnston of Ellon; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the Elnora Home Care team especially Sarah and Patty for their support in helping mom stay at home as long as possible, as well as Dr. Maria Lee, Dr. Joanna Slusar, and the nursing staff at Olds Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care in the last month of her journey.
If friends so desire, we are sure Mom would appreciate donations to the Olds Hospital or to the Poppy Fund in lieu of flowers. Because of current circumstances, we will hold a Celebration of Life at a future date where we can pay fitting tribute to our feisty, independent, strong-willed mother.
