On Sunday, July 26, 2020, Jozsef Frank Tony ‘Joe’ Schmidt, loving husband, father and papa, passed away at the age of 81 years. Joe was born on March 21, 1939 in Budapest, Hungary, to Maria and Pal Schmidt. He immigrated to Canada in 1956, and came to Red Deer, making it his permanent home. On August 13, 1960, Joe married Doreen Ann Huget. Together they raised three children. Joe was a Master Machinist and had a passion for creating anything with metal; he loved to build hot rods and jet boats, and was well known in those groups in Red Deer and beyond.
Joe considered his friends to be the same as family and he had a large Canadian family. Family was important to him; he always kept in touch with his family in Hungary and wanted to hear from his kids and grandkids to find out what they were doing. Family was one of his proudest achievements. He would often say “look at what this one foreigner did” with a huge smile on his face. He was so very loved and will be greatly missed by us all.
Joe will be lovingly remembered by his children, Becky (Rick) Stryker, Joe (Rhonda) Schmidt and Darcie (Sara) Schmidt; his grandchildren, Jordan, Sunny, Randi, Joshua, Rylie, Sophie and Brady; and his four great grandchildren, Jaxon, Kallan, Evalyn, and Amelia. He is also survived by his sister, Ila Szűcs and her family in Hungary. Joe was predeceased by his parents in Hungary, and his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Doreen in 2019.
Joe’s family is asking that anyone who wants to drive by through the Alto Reste Cemetery for a memorial parade (hot rod, or in your vehicle), the parade will be on Saturday August 8, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Family will be there to see you.
