Ponoka Aquaplex expands pool schedule

Aug 4, 2020 | 2:48 PM

Officials with the Town of Ponoka say the pool schedule is expanding at the Aquaplex starting Aug. 4.

For the second phase of its reopening process following the facility shutdown earlier this year due to COVID-19, the expanded pool schedule will include extended hours, more family swim time, private and semi-private swimming lessons, water fitness and Zumba classes as well as continued access to lane swimming and the wading pool.

The changes to the pool schedule include:

  • An extra lap swim from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m. each day;
  • An additional Family Swim from 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. each day;
  • Water Fitness on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and Zumba classes on most Fridays, depending on instructor availability; and
  • The first two Family Swims each day have been increased to 1.5 hours.

Anyone wishing to swim or use the wading pool must first phone the pool to register at 403-783-0131.

A copy of the Aquaplex schedule is available on the Town website at www.ponoka.ca. Click ‘Aquaplex’ under ‘Popular Pages’, or phone the pool for more information at 403-783-0131.

Swimming lessons will begin Aug. 10 with regular private lessons for $20 or semi-private lessons for up to two children for $30. Lessons will be held Monday to Friday from 9:45 – 10:15 a.m. and from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.

A caregiver, aged 16 and older, will be required to accompany children into the water for the following swim levels: Parent and Tot, all Pre-school levels and Swim Kids 1-4 lessons as instructors will be teaching from the deck. Participants registered in Swim Kids 5-7 will require an assessment prior to the lesson to determine their skill level.

The climbing wall, rope, diving board and pool toys will remain unavailable. Patrons may bring their own equipment, provided that it is clean and disinfected. The sauna and hot tub will remain closed until Stage 3 of the Provincial Relaunch Plan.

Aquaplex staff will guide visitors through the new safety measures at the facility.

The following measures have been implemented to help protect user and staff safety due to COVID-19:

  • Water fitness and Zumba classes will have a limit of 10 participants at a time;
  • Occupancy limits will remain in place for the pools and deck, including one-way traffic measures for the lobby and pool deck;
  • Aquaplex users are asked to limit their visits to no more than three per week to allow others the opportunity to enjoy the facility;
  • There will be limited access to change rooms. Guests are required to come dressed for swimming and arrive no more than five minutes before their scheduled times; and
  • Swimmers must have a soapy shower on the pool deck before entering the pools.

Facility users at the Aquaplex will be required to use available hand sanitizer upon entering the building and follow physical distancing requirements. Aquaplex users must sign in at reception to ensure contact information is available for notification purposes should an outbreak occur.

Visitors at all Town facilities are urged to stay home if they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat or shortness of breath; if they have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days; or if they have been in close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19.
