Officials concerned as Alberta reports 141 new COVID-19 cases

Alberta confirmed 141 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

The province now has 9,728 total cases — 1,193 active cases, an increase of 84 from Monday, and 8,363 recovered cases, an increase of 55.

There are 93 Albertans currently in hospital due to COVID-19, including 18 who are in ICU.

There have been two additional deaths for a total of 172.

Premier Jason Kenney says we should be concerned about the recent rise in cases across the province.

“It looks like some folks are no longer observing the public health guidelines,” he said. “Maybe that’s because some people have just become tired of this whole thing and we can all understand that, or some believe that the threat of COVID-19 is exaggerated. Maybe some young, healthy people aren’t worried about getting sick themselves, but whatever the reasons, the results are troubling.”

Kenney warned, “The last thing we want to have to do is reimpose damaging restrictions on our economy and our freedoms.”

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says now is the time to show officials that additional public health restrictions are not needed.

“I am concerned by the continued rise in active cases. Our health system is watching the situation closely, but I want to be clear – we all have a role to play in reducing the rise in cases we’re seeing.”

Red Deer has 12 active cases as of Tuesday, an increase of one from Monday.

Across the Central Zone there are 145 active cases, up from 131 on Monday, with 29 people in hospital and five in intensive care.

There are 102 recovered cases in the Central Zone to date out of 248 confirmed cases.

Other current active cases in the zone include 20 in the County of Stettler, 11 in Kneehill County, 11 in the County of Paintearth, six in Red Deer County, three in Sylvan Lake, eight in Lacombe County and eight in Ponoka County.
