Gordon Moen passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at his home in Red Deer on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at the age of 93 years. Gordon was born in Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan, the eighth of eleven children, and raised in Bjorkdale, Saskatchewan. Gordon’s formal education ended when he, along with some of his brothers, too young to go to WWII, were called on to run the family farm. His life journey then took him to Lynn Lake, Manitoba to work in construction, where he met and married Lois in 1962. Their life together led them to Calgary, Alberta and Courtney, British Columbia, before settling in Red Deer in 1978. Gordon’s informal education never stopped. Everyone that knew him described him as incredibly engaged, curious and industrious. With a thirst to know how everything worked, he could build most anything. Gordon’s grandsons loved the conversations with their Grandpa. They knew to come prepared to every conversation, with all the details of their work and school lives. Gordon’s keen interest in them, and really everyone he spoke with, positively influenced and left a lasting impact. Gordon was the devoted friend you wanted when you had a project. He was also a fabulous storyteller and enthralled friends and family with numerous, often hilarious and sometimes serious tales of time in the North and in construction, always with amazing and consistent detail. Gordon and Lois managed to both work full-time, raise their family, and grow their relationship. In their support and love for one another, they were amazing role models for their sons, and many others. They loved road trips and travel and were fortunate to have great friends to share in the adventures. In his retirement, Gordon rarely missed an opportunity to “manage” the Toronto Blue Jays from his side of the television. Watching the game was typically referred to as “Gordon is working”. His sons were fortunate enough to take him on a few very memorable road trips to “manage” the Blue Jays in person. Gordon’s interest, support, and good nature will be missed immensely by everyone he touched.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Lois of Red Deer; his sons, Jim (Carol) Moen of Sherwood Park, Alberta and Ken (Kelly) Moen of Kelowna, British Columbia; and his grandsons, Nicholas and Christopher Moen of Sherwood Park, Alberta.
