Campground expansion approved at Sandy Point RV Resort

Camping options may soon be expanding around one of central Alberta’s most popular lake destinations.

On Thursday, Lacombe County’s Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) gave its approval for a 290 stall campground expansion at Sandy Point RV Resort on the west side of Gull Lake.

County officials say the campground is planned to occupy approximately 38 acres directly north of the existing campground, west of the beach.

It’s noted, the campground stalls are intended to replace condo units originally planned within Stage 2 of the overall development. Therefore, the development will not increase the original units approved in the signed Development Agreement for Sandy Point RV Resort.

Officials say the development is anticipated to be done in four phases, with each phase to include a washroom/shower building and play area with horseshoe pits, benches, and garbage cans. The campground stalls are planned to be seasonal lease lots for the duration of the summer, running from May 1 to Sept. 30.

Concerns raised over the project ranged from water and wastewater capacity, to increased traffic and noise.

However, plans are for the campground to be connected to the existing communal water and sewer system, and to provide 50 amp power to each stall.

It’s expected the campground would generate approximately 20-50 vehicle trips per day and include visitor parking in the expansion area.

Paved roads and trails are also a requirement for this type of development in Lacombe County. A request from the developer to relax those standards to gravel roads and trails however, was denied by MPC.

Construction on the project’s first phase is expected to get underway this fall, with lots available for spring 2021.
