Local tailor making face masks for the community

A local tailor in Red Deer is stepping up to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community by not only making face masks for those who need some, but also by sharing on how to make them.

Magdy Beshay from Magdy Tailor Shop Red Deer says he wants to do what he can to help keep the community safe and healthy.

“We have a lot of experience making patterns,” he points out. “So we’ve shared the easiest way to make fabric face masks on our Facebook page, and we’ve provided the patterns with an easy way to print, so nobody needs to go out for the patterns.”

So far, Beshay says they’ve been helping local seniors by providing them with face masks, then dropping them off at their homes – most of the time at no cost.

“We insist on helping our hospital with disposable gowns and face mask straps to decrease the pain of the mask’s elastic on the ears, as they’re wearing the masks all the time now,” he explains. “We can provide any one willing to help with the free patterns. That’s our responsibility at this time.”

Beshay feels it’s important to give back to the community, saying, “We are here on earth to help each other and that’s needed at this time. Everyone is welcome to provide feedback on how we can help more as we provide all our experience and ability for our community.”

Beshay anticipates fabric face mask will be needed for everyone at some point to avoid respiratory spray from others.

“We will respond to any inquiries on our Facebook page or through our website messages,” he suggests. “We started to sell the fabric face mask for $4 for anyone who could afford that, and for free for lots of people who couldn’t. For those who couldn’t, we delivered face masks to their homes when we started this initiative at the beginning of March.”

Despite the stress of the pandemic, Beshay feels central Albertans are strong and will get through these challenging times together.

“Please be safe and stay at home healthy,” he exclaims. “Lots of our doctors and nurses are having a hard time and lots of others are working with fear for both themselves and their families, so let us help them at least with some hopeful words. Everyone should know that Magdy Tailor Shop Red Deer is here to help as much as we can, and serve all of our community, all the time.”
