Rebels veteran still going hard

Hausinger not letting up as WHL career nears end

Mar 5, 2020 | 4:33 PM

After more than 300 games and a pair of stops in Red Deer, Cam Hausinger is coming to the end of his WHL career.

The forward has played five years in the WHL, tallying over 150 points twice scoring 20 or more goals in a season.

When asked how he would like to end off his career, he had two words.

“With wins,” said Hausinger. “In my entire career I didn’t do a lot of winning. Just try and win hockey games, have fun with it and help my team any way I can.

“Hopefully, I’ll play some professional hockey after my career. That’s still up in the air but we’re just taking these nine games and try to enjoy the moment, be in the moment, and be able to create memories for a lifetime.”

Hausinger and the Rebels have nine games remaining in the 2019-2020 campaign. In a year where they’ll miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014, the team wants to use these last games to help lay the foundation for the future.

“Everyone is fighting for a spot right now, everyone is committed to what we’re doing and the path that is going to be here in the future,” said the native of Anchorage, Alaska. “Obviously, I am 20 years old so I won’t be here in the future. We’re trying to mold the young guys, letting them know what the good details are, time management, just making good opportunities for them to succeed for next year.”

Red Deer’s next opponent comes in the form of the Spokane Chiefs who are 9-1 in their past ten games. The team is led by New Jersey first-round defenseman Ty Smith, who recorded eight points in a game a week ago.

“(He’s) unreal,” Hausinger admitted. “You just have to contain him any way you can. He’s a special player that is going to always keep you guessing on the defensive side of things. Not a lot you can do with players like that, their just god-gifted.”

Spokane, Hausinger adds, is a fast team whose offence is ran through the handful of top players on their roster.

“They play well with the puck and are very disciplined in their systems. We have to out-compete them and be hard on their top players because that’s what makes their team run most. Their high-end top players generate a lot of offence for them. We have to be hard against them.”

The Rebels and Chiefs go at it Friday night at the Westerner Park Centrium. Puck drops at 7 p.m., you can listen live on 106.7 The Drive.
