Avery Lajeunesse of the RDC Queens is the 2019-20 ACAC Women’s Hockey Rookie of the Year.

Ashley Sutherland of the Queens was named an ACAC Women’s Hockey First All-Conference team selection. Camryn Wallan made the ACAC Women’s Hockey Second All-Conference team.

All three played pivotal roles in the Queens (15-6-3-0) locking up second place in the league, and pushing the NAIT Ooks to double-overtime in the third game of the best-of-three semi-final.

Over 23 regular season games, Lajeunesse, a first-year Open Studies student, scored a team-tying eight goals, including one game-winner. Her goal scoring production tied for sixth across the league, among a group of veteran players.

She added seven assists and finished second on the RDC Queens, and 11th in ACAC Women’s Hockey, with 15 points.

Sutherland was effective at both ends of the ice and ranked first in ACAC defencemen points and fifth among all skaters. The second-year led the Queens with ten assists and 18 points. The Bachelor of Kinesology student’s hard and accurate shot pushed her into a tie with Lajeunesse for the team goal scoring lead with eight. Two of those were game-winners and four were on the power play, which led the squad.

The dedicated student from Airdrie was named an alternate captain at the start of the season and she led on and off the ice. In the hard-fought playoff series against NAIT, Sutherland recorded four points in only three games. One of her markers was a game-winning goal.

During the regular season, Wallan, an alternate captain, posted five goals, nine assists and 14 points. The speedy forward from Beaverlodge ranked third on the team and 13th in the ACAC. The third-year struck twice on the power play and recorded three game-winners. In the playoffs, the diligent Bachelor of Education Elementary student was effective killing penalties and applying a relentless forecheck.
