Workplace Inclusion Forum open to the public this Wednesday

Red Deer’s annual Workplace Inclusion Forum is happening this week, with a focus on practical tools for diverse workplaces.

The event runs from 8:15 a.m to 4:30 p.m. on March 4 at the Baymont Inn & Suites.

Lori Jack, co-chair of the Red Deer Local Immigration Partnership (RDLIP), says if employers know they don’t have a diverse workforce, they should be asking themselves ‘Why not?’

“I don’t think employers necessarily don’t want to be diverse and inclusive, but some of them don’t really know how to go about doing it,” says Jack.

“The end result is that hopefully we will have more employers who will sign on to our charter which basically commits them to certain things.”

An official Workplace Inclusion Charter is expected to be completed in the next year, and will feature different tiers of commitment an employer can sign onto.

The charter and this week’s conference have several champion employers helping to move things forward, including Royal Bank of Canada, Super 8, Central Alberta Refugee Effort, Red Deer Regional Hospital, The City of Red Deer, Stantec and Canadian Mental Health Association.

“Our keynote speaker will speak to the hard facts about the return on investment, and the way she terms it is ‘putting the elephant in the room’ and having a discussion about what the barriers are, and what we can do to help break down those barriers,” Jack continues. “Throughout the day, with workshops, we’ll be targeting all the different under-represented groups.”

Those groups include immigrants, Indigenous, people with disabilities, people with mental illness, LGBTQ+ people, and the 50+ population.

Tickets are $20 to take part in the conference, though subsidies are available. The conference will also be live-streamed.
