Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Queens Curling | ACAC Championships presented by Holiday Inn | Pidherney Curling Centre

The Red Deer College Queens had a fantastic weekend on the pebbled ice and the only team they couldn’t defeat was the eventual gold medal winning University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. The Queens earned ACAC silver.

The Queens went 2-1 throughout round robin competition, with a 7-6 win over NAIT and 6-3 victory over Concordia. The U of A Augustana Vikings shaded the Queens 7-6. When the teams were seeded first to fourth, the Vikings eclipsed the Queens 5-4. On Sunday, RDC soundly defeated Concordia 8-1, which put the hosts in the gold medal game. On the final shot, the U of A Augustana Vikings edged the RDC Queens 5-4 in the finals.

“I think they did very well. We came into this expecting very tough competition and we had very tough competition,” said RDC Queens Curling Coach Eldon Raab. “The girls excelled and really showed maturity. They did what we wanted them to do, perform at their best. I’m very proud of them.”

Queens Hockey | Feb. 28 to Mar. 1 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens battled hard but dropped the third game of the best-of-three ACAC semi-final to the NAIT Ooks in double-overtime. The Ooks captured game one 5-2 in Red Deer. Ashley Sutherland and Mary Hirsch scored for RDC.

With their backs against the wall, the Queens evened the series with a 4-3 road victory. Avery Lajeunnesse, Hirsch, Madison Sansom and Sutherland tallied. RDC goalie Madison Fox was tremendous, making 27 saves.

Back at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre for game three, the NAIT Ooks struck in double-overtime, earning a 3-2 decision. Hirsch and Kirsten Baumgardt recorded the Queens’ markers.

“I thought they battled right until the end. They competed all season and it was a great series. That’s how overtime goes. One shot and that’s the difference,” stated Queens Head Coach Kelly Coulter. “You see the tears of sorrow, but that’s because they truly loved playing for each other and the crown in front of them.”

Kings Hockey | Friday, Feb. 28 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

Sylvan Lake’s Chase Thudium connected in double-overtime, leading the Kings to a 6-5 home win. Scoring in regulation for RDC were Chase Thudium, Trevor Costello, Lynnden Pastachak, Scott Ferguson and Regan Doig. Kings goaltender Arik Weersink made 40 saves.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Feb. 29 | SAIT

Queens Basketball | Friday, Feb. 28 | St. Mary’s University

In a very close game that came down to the final shot, the St. Mary’s University Lightning solidified a 74-73 home win. Britney Peters led the Queens with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Sandra Garcia-Bernal added 13 points and 11 boards.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, Feb. 29 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens dropped a 72-67 decision to the Lightning in the last regular season contest. Peters had a team-high 16 points. Lauren Cardinal sank 14 points and Sophie Melin had 13. The Queens (10-11) finished fifth in the south division.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of positives in growth individually in the athletes and collectively in the program. Some of the key things we decided as a team we’d focus on back in August, were our relentlessness, refusing to quit, and trying to be a great teammate,” said Queens Head Coach Mandy Botham.

“Consistency is another one. Consistency in our effort, in our attitude, in the classroom, going to lift weights and getting our shots up. From a basketball skills side and from that culture side, I’m really proud and excited the direction Queens Basketball is headed.”

Kings Basketball | Friday, Feb. 28 | St. Mary’s University

Cody White hit the game-winning shot and led the RDC Kings to a 78-77 road win over the St. Mary’s University Lightning. Toronto’s Tyronn King scored a game-high 27 points. Anthony Harper recorded a double-double, with 14 points and ten boards.
